High School

What if high school could look different?

the framework

001.

Deep, integrated academics.

The classical history cycle, lab science, classic literature, and interdisciplinary writing. Seminar-style discussions about philosophy, virtue, current events. A holistic understanding of art and culture.

002.

Real world experiences and impact.

Community partnerships with a variety of organizations provide opportunities for students to do real work in multiple disciplines. Students apply classroom knowledge, learn about the opportunities available after graduation, and build a portfolio of experiences.

003.

Weekly field experiences.

Students visit the community partner location weekly to do field work on their project, interface with experts, and gain real-world experience in different settings.

a sample day in the life

  • The day starts with colloquium. We read an excerpt from Plutarch’s Lives, and brainstorm other historical and contemporary figures that demonstrate the same character.
  • Next is science. This year we’re studying biology, and we’re using microscopes to learn about the microorganisms in the water samples we collected from the Potomac last Friday.
  • Humanities and Writing are the next blocks. We’re studying Ancient History and reading The Odyssey. We chat about the reading we had this week, and draw connections between the trials of Odysseus and the challenges faced by the ancient Greeks. We’re working on a paper about the hero’s journey in literature, history, and how it applies to our own lives.
  • We finish up formal academics with a fine arts block. We’ve been studying Romanticism through the art of Delacroix and the music of Chopin, and we’ll be creating our own representative work in the medium of our choice.
  • The afternoon is devoted to our community project. This rotation is a partnership with an environmental protection group, and we’re studying pollution and its impact on the microbiome of local waterways. Using information gathered from our microorganism samples, we’re working on a presentation for our county board to improve recycling initiatives in our community.
